Des Petits Ventres

Isn't it cute?
In St. Jovite near the main stoplight, there was always this cute little 19th century house that we would walk past.  It was a shoe store when we arrived, and then that business closed.  While the building was for sale, we peered in and marvelled at the historic qualities of the interior, including the original wide plank floors.  We hoped that someone would buy the building and maintain its charm, and our wish came true as it is now home to Des Petits Ventres, a new favourite location for us.

We first noticed this restaurant in the fall of 2015 and finally made a visit over our Christmas holidays later that year.  It was excellent - the menu is French and has many options.  The wine list has a few dozen selections from around the world at all price points, including some private imports.  The desserts are made in-house by one of the owners who is a pastry chef.  The service is prompt and attentive, in part because the owners are there, greeting and serving patrons, staying close to their business.  This is not the cheapest restaurant in town, but we find it to be very good value for money.

In terms of decor, the interior is cosy and charming as you would expect judging by the exterior.  We dined at DPV this week and we sat on the wrap-around patio which holds a dozen or so tables.  We loved this spot for people watching on busy rue St. Jovite, perfect on a warm summer night.  We were the first on the patio that evening, but within half an hour we saw many walk up to check out the menu and take a table.  So on a summer Wednesday night you apparently don't need reservations, but it may not stay that way for long...highly recommended!

COVID-19 Update Sept 2021
Just an FYI for those of you who value the safety of the vaccine passport system implemented in Quebec, Karen and I dined at DPV this past weekend and they were faithfully checking their patrons' vaccine status.  Even though we sat on the patio, it was still reassuring to know we were surrounded by fully-vaxxed customers!  Sadly not all establishments are taking the passport mandate seriously so I'm giving kudos to those that do.
